AI Is Changing My Business—But Not the Way You Might Think

Every week I hear the same question.

“Is AI going to replace web developers?”

My answer is usually the same.

No.

But it is changing the way experienced developers work.

My role hasn’t become smaller.

It’s become more strategic. I don’t use AI to build websites for me.

I use it to think. Before I write code, I’ll often have a conversation with ChatGPT about different technical approaches, possible client solutions, communication strategies, project planning, and alternative ways to solve a problem.

Sometimes that conversation changes the code. More often, it changes the way I think about the project.

Twenty-five years taught me something important.

Writing code has never been the hardest part. The hardest part is understanding the problem correctly. AI helps me explore ideas faster. Experience helps me recognize the right one. Those two things work remarkably well together.

“AI helps me ask better questions. Experience helps me recognize the right answers.”

AI doesn’t replace judgment.

It amplifies it.

A client still needs someone who can ask:

  • What are we really trying to accomplish?
  • Is there a simpler solution?
  • Will this still make sense two years from now?
  • Does this fit the way your business actually works?

Those questions don’t come from AI. They come from years of experience working with clients, solving technical challenges, and understanding how businesses actually operate.

I’m more interested in businesses than websites.

This has probably been my biggest realization over the past year. A website is only one part of a company’s digital presence. Businesses also need better workflows. Better communication. Better customer experiences. Better systems.

That is where I believe AI becomes truly valuable—not replacing people, but helping them work more effectively.

My goal

I’m not trying to replace creativity. I’m trying to remove busy work. If AI helps me spend less time wrestling with repetitive tasks and more time helping clients solve meaningful problems… then everyone wins.

Looking ahead

I’ve watched the web evolve from static HTML pages to content management systems, responsive design, e-commerce, cloud hosting, and modern web applications.

Every major shift has changed the tools we use. None of them have changed the importance of listening to clients, thinking creatively, and making thoughtful decisions. I believe AI is another one of those turning points. Not because it replaces experienced professionals. Because it gives experienced professionals another powerful tool. That’s exactly how I intend to use it.
